Why is the flashpoint important?
The flashpoint of any liquid is the lowest temperature at which it will produce sufficient vapor to produce a flammable mixture in the air. The lower the flashpoint temperature, the easier it is to ignite the air if an ignition source is present. The higher the flashpoint, the safer the material is to handle.
According to the Material Safety Data Sheet published by ConocoPhillips, the flashpoint of diesel fuel is from 52 degrees Celsius. The flashpoint for both neat and soluble bandsaw oil is greater than 160 degrees Celsius
The diesel fuel does not need a spark to ignite, just compression. As the air compresses, it begins to heat up and reaches a temperature that will just ignite the fuel.
What is a Refractometer?
A refractometer is a tool that can determine the concentration of a particular substance in a liquid solution. By measuring how much refraction a solution causes, you can learn about its density, which in turn will tell you how much of a substance is dissolved in solution. The most common refractometers are handheld, analogue instruments and cost from around £20.
